How to optimize flash movie

One of the most overlooked feature is flash banner optimization. I had realized that many designers are good in creativity but when it comes to optimization they don’t have any clue about it. I have enlisted few tricks to reduce movie size.

  1. Compressing images (Most common):- This is the most common trick that every designer and developer knows. If we compress the image size then movie size also decreased.
  2. Animation:- When creating any animation sequence always try to use tweened animation instead of key frame based animation. Also, use movie clips instead of graphical symbols as much as possible.
  3. Compressing Sound:- If you are using any sound in your animation, then you can also reduce weight by compressing sound file size. Select MP3 compression format. Mp3 compression is good for loops and voice-overs.
  4. Using Text/Font:- Use limited no. of fonts and text because it adds a lot of weight to the final movie . you can use – try to use the system fonts which comes with your os (operating system) like sans-serif, serif, and typewriter. Also, use embedded font sparingly because they increase file size too. Many designers break text apart. But it increases the size of the animation because when you break apart text, you convert the text in to actual shaped lines. Every shape of the latter takes up a lot space, so if you want to reduce the size of your animation or movie never break text apart. The benefit is that when text is not broken, it is stored in an ASCII format well understood by windows, and rendered in the flash player.

Some others tricks are:-

  1. Optimize curve using (menu–> modify–> optimize) in optimize curve dialog box the smoothing slider may reduce the no. of curves used to create shape and optimizing curve reduce the size of the movie.

  2. When using colors don’t use custom colors. always try to use color palette for colors.
  3. When using object in movie, group objects whenever possible. It also reduces the size of the file.
  4. Use vector graphics instead of bitmap images in a movie.
